Kit Carson papers, 1847-1923.

Summary: Collection consists of photocopies of both Carson's will and his certificate of appointment as an Indian agent; the original of his oath of allegiance to the U.S. as a Lt. Colonel; newspaper clippings on Carson. Also included is a photocopy of A.W. Thompson's essay "The Story of Camp Nichols." Carson established Camp Nichols in the Oklahoma panhandle to protect travelers on the Santa Fe Trail.

Albert W. Thompson, pioneer Clayton businessman, publisher, civic leader, and historian, was born in Belfast, Maine on May 17, 1864. After living in Colorado he moved to New Mexico. Thompson entered the sheep and real estate businesses in Clayton, N.M. in 1889. Also in 1889, Thompson purchased the Clayton Enterprise, which he operated for two years. In 1905 he relocated to Denver, Colo., but maintained Clayton business interests, and continued to contribute historical columns to local newspapers...
